Bonnie, a COSA member, and Bernie, an SAA member, met in recovery and married shortly before giving this joint talk. They describe their recovery processes and how they handle challenges in their relationship. Bonnie grew up in a dysfunctional family and carried deep shame into adulthood. In COSA, she learned about setting boundaries and meeting her own needs. She was able to love herself outside of a relationship, even making amends to her inner little girl. In his addiction, Bernie denied his feelings and avoided responsibility. In recovery, he made spirituality the number one thing in his life. As a result, he is able to accept Bonnie’s feelings with detachment.
